A number of relationships in the show are in a complicated position. Some of them have been rocked by long-distance, since the Byers family moved away to California. But for some of the relationships and friendships still remaining in Hawkins, it’s not easy either.

Unfortunately, Lucas and Max aren’t together anymore in Stranger Things season 4 part 1. Due to her grief over Billy, Max has isolated herself. Apart from Billy, she also lost her best friend, Eleven too. In the opening episode, it is revealed that Max has pulled away from her new friends and has broken up with Lucas.

Meanwhile, Lucas has also seemed to join a new group of friends in their freshman year of high school. He no longer plays D&D with Mike and Dustin, who now play with Eddie in The Hellfire Club, since he’s joined the basketball team. Instead, Lucas hangs with the jocks to become popular in school. All these factors affected their relationship and they broke up.
Even after the breakup, the couple did have a little moment together at the end of Stranger Things season 4 part 1. When Max was possessed by Vecna it was Lucas who remembered her favourite song and played it to get her back in the real world. It hopefully means that we could see them get back together in part 2.
