Stranger Things fans have long speculated that the final season will feature time travel. However, a wild theory suggests that instead of going to the future, it will go back in time to a specific moment from season 1.

After four seasons full of twists and turns, Stranger Things finally ends with season 5. Time travel in the final season is a heavy possibility as it has been hinted throughout the series.

Stranger Things Time Travel Hints

In season 3, a Back to the Future poster was put on full display, which is a reference to time travel. Another hint was at the start of season 4 in Eleven’s letter to Mike. She wrote,

“Dear Mike, Today is day 185. Feels more like 10 years. Joyce says time is funny like that. Emotions can make it speed up or slow down. We are all time travelers if you think about it…”.

The most significant clue was in the last episode of season 4, “The Piggyback”. When Nancy and Steve are talking in the woods, Steve says,

The first episode of season 5 is titled “The Crawl”. There are many theories about the monster crawling into Hawkins as Nancy saw in her visions. However, there is also a possibility that time will be reversed to the day Will went missing in Hawkins.

Stranger Things 5 Will Go Back in Time to Save Will Byers

Duffer brothers have also revealed the opening scene of season 5. It reads.

A CHILD’S VOICE. Singing a familiar song:

This depicts a flashback scene from season 1 when Will Byers was taken to the Upside Down. It was the most pivotal moment in Stranger Things and revisiting this event could answer many questions.

Going back to that day could reveal why the Upside Down is frozen in time to the day Will Byers went missing. Also, it can answer why Will was taken and how he survived in the Upside Down for a week.

Stranger Things 5 Photos Feature Younger Will Byers

Recent photos from sets have further fueled these theories. One image featured Noah Schnapp lying next to a younger version of Will Byers from season 1. Additionally, the special behind-the-scenes video from season 5 showed Will Byers falling.

The big question remains: who will travel back in time to the Upside Down? Some theories suggest that Will Byers and Mike Wheeler might journey back to prevent the disappearance of Will. This event triggered the whole set of events in Hawkins and preventing it from happening will potentially save the town.

However, there is another possibility that the final season will simply feature flashbacks to season 1. It will be a lot easier in terms of production and narrative.
