The official teaser for Stranger Things season 5 is finally out and the fans couldn’t be more thrilled. After waiting for over three years, we have been given a first glimpse into the final chapter and it’s packed with action, nostalgia and hidden clues.

The teaser has already gone viral and has more than 50 million views across all platforms. With emotional moments, intense visuals and nods to Jurassic Park, it sets the stage for what could be the most dramatic season yet. The teaser has also dropped a major hint about a key mystery of Season 1: what really happened to Will Byers in the Upside Down?

Will Byers’ Upside Down Mystery

Back in season 1, Will Byers was abducted by the Demogorgon and taken to the Upside Down. He remained trapped in the alternate dimension for a whole week. When Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper finally found him, he was barely alive.

Although he returned home and appeared to recover, season 2 revealed that he still had a connection to the dark dimension. In the following seasons, he continued to sense the presence of evil. He’d get a tingling sensation on his neck whenever the Mind Flayer or Vecna was near. Clearly, his connection to the Upside Down never fully ended. But why?

The answer lies in uncovering what really happened to Will in the Upside Down. How did he manage to survive an entire week when no other victims ever did?

That’s the mystery Stranger Things 5 will explore.

Stranger Things 5 Features Will Byers Flashback Scene

In the new teaser, there’s a quick shot of a boy soaring through the air from one tree to another, trying to escape from Demogorgon. Though his face was hidden in the darkness, the outfit closely resembles Will Byers. Now a behind the scenes footage has confirmed that it is indeed Will.

Netflix had previously released a BTS footage from season 5, showing young Will Byers falling from a tree on the set. It looks like the same moment we see in the teaser. This strongly suggests that season 5 will feature flashbacks to Will’s time in the Upside Down.

But that’s not all.

The Duffer Brothers once revealed the opening scene of the final season. The script read:

DARKNESS

The sound of COLD WIND. GROANING TREES. And…

A CHILD’S VOICE. Singing a familiar song:

It’s heavily implied that the child is Will Byers singing Should I Stay or Should I Go in the Upside Down. Season 5 will likely begin with flashbacks of what happened to him during the terrifying week.

Adding to the clues, Noah Schnapp also shared a BTS photo of him lying next to a young Will Byers.

What Could These Flashback Scenes Reveal?

These flashback scenes could finally answer some long-standing questions in the series.

How did Will manage to survive? Why is the Upside Down frozen in time? The dark dimension is still stuck in 1983, the day Will disappeared. Could Will himself have created the exact copy of Hawkins while trapped there? Why is Will connected to Vecna?

The Duffer Brothers have also confirmed that the final season will uncover the origins of the Upside Down, so we can expect some major reveals.
