If you’re like me, you’ve probably binge-watched Stranger Things more than once. But you might have been wondering how old these kids are supposed to be, and aren’t these actors way older in real life?

In Season 1 (2016), the Hawkins kids were written as awkward middle schoolers dealing with bullies, Dungeons & Dragons, and, of course, the Upside Down. But fast-forward to Season 5 in 2025, and the actors have grown up right before our eyes.

Hollywood has always had a tradition of casting adult actors to play teenagers and Stranger Things is no exception. By Season 5, most of the “kids” are written as 15–16 years old, while in reality the actors are already in their early 20s. By Season 5, Eleven is meant to be around 15-16 years old. In reality, Millie Bobby Brown is 21, which sounds like a huge gap on paper. But because fans have literally grown up with her since she was 12, the difference feels natural. We’ve been on the journey with both Millie and Eleven, making her teenage role still feel believable.

Mike Wheeler X Finn Wolfhard

Mike has always been the group’s natural leader, the one who refused to give up on Will in Season 1 and the first to believe in Eleven when everyone else thought she was just “weird”. By Season 5, Dustin should be about 16, though Gaten Matarazzo is 22. His playful personality and youthful charm make the gap barely noticeable. Dustin simply feels like a teenager, even if the actor is well into his twenties.

Max Mayfield X Sadie Sink

Max entered the club in Season 2 as the fearless skater girl who instantly shook up the group dynamic. Confident and competitive, she wasn’t afraid to call out Mike or challenge Lucas.
