Stranger Things 5’s Villain Is Will – Theory Explained
Season 4 of Stranger Things ended with an ominous teaser for Will and Vecna’s connection. It might have confirmed a major villain theory for season 5.
In episode 9, Will revealed to Mike Wheeler that he can feel Vecna proving that he is still alive. At the end of Season 4, Will feels the familiar tingle on his neck, which proves that Will still has some connection with the Upside Down.
Apart from Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who opened the portal to the Upside Down, the Stranger Things character with the most significant connection to the Upside Down is Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). Will was taken by Demogorgon and was trapped in the Upside Down in season 1, while he was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2. In season 4 it was confirmed that Will is somehow connected to Vecna. Whenever the influence of Vecna is near, Will feels a chilling sensation on the back of his neck.
Now we know that Vecna preys on his victims through their trauma which Will Byers is suffering from. In episode 8 of season 4, Will expresses his love for Mike but Mike was being oblivious to the heartbreaking confession of the isolated Will Byers. This fan theory suggests the heartbreak for Will Byers will drive him to the dark side. Vecna can use Will’s pain in his plan during Stranger Things season 5. There is a chance that Vecna will drive Will into joining his plan to destroy Hawkins, thus making him a villain in the series’ final installment.

Stranger Things season 4 also introduced several parallels between young Henry Creel and young Will Byers. Just like Will, Henry Creel was a “sensitive boy” who enjoyed drawing, and both of the characters draw the same exact picture of the Mind Flayer. Henry saw a reflection of himself in Will Byers as he was bullied by classmates and had emotional trauma from his father. It might hint that Vecna will use Will as another villainous host.
There is also speculation that Will might get some powers in season 5. Vecna has revealed that he used the Mind Flayer in order to open up more gates to Hawkins. So it means that Vecna could also grant supernatural abilities to someone else. Though the fan theory that Will Byers becomes season 5 villain would be a surprising twist for the character who has suffered greatly. Most likely it would be Vecna controlling him again through their psychic connection, just like how he was able to control Billy as Stranger Things season 3’s villain, Will could potentially fall under Vecna’s spell.
