The Duffer Brothers have finally provided us with an update on the Stranger Things season 5 release.

Fans of Stranger Things were left stunned after the Duffer Brothers recently admitted that the release date for the final season was still undecided. They also revealed that it would be quite challenging to release it in 2025.

The creators have now shared an exciting update, confirming that they are committed to releasing Stranger Things 5 this year.

Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer were recently honored at SCAD TVfest in Atlanta with the Variety Showrunner Award. The award was presented to them by their cast member Caleb McLaughlin.

During the event, Matt Duffer spoke about the final season’s movie-length episodes. He said,

“Ross and I do love longer films. We love the special effects sequences, but at the end of the day, obviously, it’s about the character work. And then what I do love about television, even though we were film guys growing up, is I like we’re able to do these huge cinematic special effects, extravaganza sequences.”

The Duffers also confirmed that the final season will include plenty of flashbacks to season 1. While discussing how much the young cast has grown, Matt Duffer shared:

“They are, yes! You kind of forget it about until you look back at Season 1 or you’re gonna put in a flashback and you’re like, ‘Oh my god.’ They’re tiny little guys. But it’s like family now.”

Duffer Brothers Update on Stranger Things 5 Release Date

At the SCAD TVfest, the Duffer Brothers also reassured fans that post-production is moving ahead of schedule which is quite rare for them. They revealed that work on the digital effects sequences began in January, putting the production in a strong position.

While talking about the release plan, the Duffer Brothers confirmed that the final season will be released in 2025. However, fans should not expect it anytime soon as they are looking for a release in the last quarter of the year.

The latest update from the Duffer Brothers is optimistic as compared to their previous statement. Just last week, they admitted that releasing Stranger Things 5 in 2025 would be a challenge due to the extensive post-production work still needed. This led to a massive backlash from fans on social media.

Meanwhile, Netflix has officially begun promoting Stranger Things 5. Various posters featuring the show have been spotted in multiple cities, all displaying the release year as 2025.
