Why Millie Bobby Brown Stopped Using Social Media

September 1, 2024

Millie Bobby Brown rose to fame after the release of Stranger Things back in 2016. She continues to receive global acclaim for her role as Eleven and her other big projects, like the Enola Holmes mystery film series on Netflix.

But for Millie, the success has come at a cost. She was just 12 years old when season 1 of Stranger Things was released and is still only 18 years old. In a new interview with Allure, she revealed that she receives a lot of hate and bullying online which ultimately prompted her to delete all social media apps from her phone.

“It’s really hard to be hated on when you don’t know who you are yet,” she told the outlet. “So it’s like, ‘What do they hate about me? ’Cause I don’t know who I am.’ It’s almost like, ‘Okay, I’m going to try being this today.’ [And then they say], ‘Oh, no, I hate that.’ ‘Okay. Forget that. I’m going to try being this today.’ ‘Oh, my God! I hate when you do that.’ Then you just start shutting down because you’re like, ‘Who am I meant to be? Who do they need me to be for them?’”

“Then I started to grow more, and my family and friends really helped,” she added. “It helped to be able to understand that I don’t need to be anything they said that I need to be. I just have to develop within myself. That’s what I did.”

Millie revealed that she has someone else monitor and upload her posts on Instagram and Facebook. Now Millie only speaks directly to fans via blog posts on the Florence by Mills website. It works because, as she says, “Nobody can comment.”
