Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 Finally Confirms Byler Fate
Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 is finally here, and fans can’t stop talking about it. The second half of the season doesn’t just dive deeper into the mysteries of the Upside Down; it also delivers some of the most emotionally powerful character moments the show has ever seen.
While Volume 2 answers several long-standing questions about Vecna and the fate of Hawkins, one storyline has sparked the biggest discussion online: Will Byers’ long-awaited coming-out scene and what it means for Byler (Mike Wheeler and Will Byers).
For years, fans have debated whether Byler was endgame. Now, Volume 2 may have finally given us a clear answer and not everyone is happy about it.
Will Byers Comes Out in Stranger Things 5 Volume 2

Will Byers’ coming-out moment takes place near the end of Episode 7 of Stranger Things 5. As the Hawkins gang prepares for their final mission, returning to the Upside Down to stop Vecna and prevent the worlds from merging, Will realizes he can no longer keep his truth hidden.
He gathers the group in the breakroom of the Squawk radio station and delivers a long, heartfelt speech that lays bare years of fear, isolation, and internal struggle. For the first time, Will openly talks about who he is and how difficult it has been pretending otherwise.
During the scene, Will explains that while he shares nearly everything in common with his friends from late-night D&D sessions to bike rides, movie debates, and junk food rituals, there has always been one part of himself he felt forced to hide.
“And… and we like Mike Duds in our popcorn with extra butter. And we like drinking Coke with Pop Rocks. And we like bike races and trading comics and NASA and Steve Martin and Lucky Charms and literally all the same things. I just… I just… I… I just… I don’t like girls. I mean I do. Just not like you guys do.”
He admits that he is different, not because he wants to be, but because it’s who he is. Will acknowledges that he has had a crush on someone who could never return those feelings, and that accepting this truth has been one of the hardest parts of his journey.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking moment comes when Will reveals that Vecna showed him a vision, a future where being honest pushes him further away from the people he loves. A future where concern turns into distance, and distance turns into loneliness. Even though Will knows Vecna cannot see the future, the fear felt painfully real.
What makes this scene especially impactful is the reaction of the Hawkins gang. No one interrupts Will. No one looks uncomfortable. They listen fully and sincerely.

You can see the weight of Will’s words hit each of them as they realize how much he has been carrying alone for years.
As Will becomes overwhelmed with emotion, Joyce immediately reassures him, promising that he will never lose her. One by one, the rest of the group shows their support before pulling Will into a group hug, a quiet but powerful moment filled with love, understanding, and acceptance.
It’s a scene that allows Will, for the first time, to feel truly seen. Free from shame, fear, and secrecy, he finally gets to exist as himself among the people who matter most.
Byler Fate Finally Confirmed in Volume 2
Will’s coming-out scene also addresses the long-running Byler debate and it appears to confirm what many fans feared.
During his speech, Will acknowledges that the person he had a crush on is straight and could never feel the same way. While he doesn’t say Mike Wheeler’s name out loud, the implication is clear.
“And I, uh, I had this crush on someone even though I know they’re not like me. But then I realized he’s just my Tammy. And by Tammy, I mean it was never about him. It was about me. And I thought I was finally okay with myself. But then today, Vecna showed me what would happen if I did this. If I told you guys the truth.”

The moment mirrors Robin Buckley’s storyline from earlier seasons. In Volume 1, Robin opened up to Will about her crush on Tammy Thompson — only to realize Tammy was straight. That heartbreak helped Robin understand that her happiness didn’t depend on someone who could never return her feelings, but on accepting herself.
Will’s realization follows the same emotional path. He admits that his feelings were never really about the other person — they were about understanding himself.
Did Mike Realize He Was Will’s Crush?
During the monologue, fans noticed Mike Wheeler quietly nodding, as if he were connecting the dots. While Stranger Things does not explicitly confirm whether Mike realizes he was the subject of Will’s crush, the moment strongly suggests that the truth may fully surface in the finale.
The Duffer Brothers have confirmed that Mike understood he was the crush of Will. While talking to PEOPLE, they said;
“Once Will is talking about Tammy and all that and his experience, yeah, it’s Mike — and his friends — all realizing and understanding now for the first time, even if Mike has been somewhat oblivious over these years, what his friend is saying. He’s clocking what Will felt over the years.”
Volume 2 makes it clear that Will has accepted a painful truth: Mike Wheeler is straight, and a romantic relationship between them isn’t possible. While that confirmation may disappoint many Byler fans, it also marks a major step forward for Will’s character growth.
Instead of defining his story by unrequited love, Stranger Things 5 allows Will to reclaim his narrative, one rooted in self-acceptance, courage, and emotional honesty.
