Stranger Things Season 5 Filming Confirms a Dead Character’s Return
As Stranger Things heads into the final season, a new behind-the-scenes video has hinted at the unexpected return of a character thought to be long gone.
With filming for season 5 nearing its end, Stranger Things fans are eagerly looking for any spoilers or hints about the show’s conclusion. A recent behind-the-scenes video featuring Dr. Brenner aka Papa from the sets has reignited speculations about his character’s fate.
Will Dr. Brenner Return in Stranger Things Season 5?
Matthew Modine’s Dr. Martin Brenner was the head scientist at Hawkins Lab and played a key role in developing Eleven’s supernatural powers. In season 4 episode 8, he was seemingly killed by the military forces and was given a proper farewell scene with Eleven.
But the latest clue suggests that Brenner may not be gone for good. Matthew Modine recently published a video from the Stranger Things set on Instagram using hashtags like #strangerthings5 #bts 😮 #drmartinbrenner #papa #indestructible.

The new video has sparked speculations among fans that Dr. Brenner might return in season 5. While the clip itself is from the season 4 set, the use of captions like #strangerthings5 and #indestructible has raised eyebrows. Netflix has not officially confirmed anything, but the possibility of his return seems more apparent given his previous comments about the matter.
After the release of season 4, Matthew Modine remarked that he does not believe that his character is dead. In an interview with Vulture, the actor said,
“Because I wouldn’t want him to be dead… Three things are curious to me: How did he survive the Demogorgon? How did he survive One?… Dr. Brenner after blowing three guards in the air, he unflinchingly thwarts her and says, “You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you?”… I don’t want to believe it’s over, because I love the Duffers.”
Dr. Brenner has a history of cheating death. He was seemingly killed by the demogorgon in the season 1 finale. But season 4 revealed that he survived and now works as the new co-lead on the clandestine NINA project.
There is also another possibility that Dr. Brenner could be seen in flashback scenes. It has been heavily hinted that season 5 will have many flashback scenes, especially from the first season. Hence it will be no surprise if he appears in one of these scenes with Eleven.
Season 4 ended on a major cliffhanger with Hawkins in ruins after the events of the finale. The final season will have an 18-month time jump as it will be set in the fall of 1987. This time jump opens the door to countless possibilities, and it will be fascinating to see how our favorite characters have evolved.
